Why Choose Coaching?
What do you most want to do before you go? What’s a dream and passion that has been eating away in the back of your mind that means the world to you if you could achieve it? What is your absolute ‘must’ do before departing from the land of the living? What could put, not just a “spark” back into your life, but, the ecological rocket fuel to ignite your entire existence with the drive to soar above mountains and ride clouds over blazing red-orange sunrises?
Have you ever read that inspirational note by Don Herold “If I had my life over”? It was made popular by Nadine Stair later on, in the format of reflections of an 85 year-old contemplating what she would do differently if given the chance to make her choices again.
Its essence is that, when nearing the end, people often regret not so much what they did, but, what they didn’t do, what they missed out on, what they failed to do. There is an incredible feeling of joy that is the product of living your very own fulfilled life. I don’t mean a life full of empty achievements that meant something for somebody else. I don’t mean ticking off a list of things to do so you could hang on to a label or accumulate material objects that cannot speak to you or give you love back. I mean… achieving a truly fulfilled life. Have you ever dreamt of climbing Mt Everest? Notice the following quote:
"The first question which you will ask and which I must try to answer is this: 'What is the use of climbing Mount Everest?' and my answer must at once be 'It is no use'... So, if you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won't see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to enjoy life. That is what life means and what life is for." – George Leigh Mallory, 1922 (18 June 1886 – 8/9 June 1924)
Now I know that most people reading this article may have many valid reasons why literally climbing Mt Everest is not “your cup of tea”. But what of the other mountain-like obstacles that have kept you from reaching your peak performance potential in the climb of life? You may be a person who has in the past climbed Mt Everest, but found that when you got there, you were not fulfilled. Many people today have mastered the Science of Achievement, but not the Art of Fulfillment.
Go back to the initial poem “If I had my life over”. What if we were to change the poem to: “Why I didn’t do the things I wanted to in life” Chances are we would probably end up with an interesting collection of reasons and pseudo-reasons, traumas and pains, justifications and tragic events, poor choices or poor courage; a true ambivalence of ‘should’ve’, ‘could’ve’ and ‘would’ve’.
These are some of the reasons people have given in the past for not achieving their dreams and their dream life:
Lack of love from my father or mother
Lack of guidance from my parents
Married/Became a parent way too young
Didn’t go to college
Had a major health challenge
Lost my dear one in death
Lost all of my funds
Got heavily into debt
- Struggled with depression or anxiety most of my life
Internal conflicts that prevent you moving forward
Tend to be out of energy and motivation and need a coffee fix
Burning fat is temporary because it comes back later
Allergic to certain foods so I can’t enjoy a proper meal with friends
And the list really goes on and on. Coaching… is about making it to the top of the mountain (alive) regardless of the reason why we didn’t make it, or why we didn’t climb to the peak before.
Traditional Therapy (potentially) helps people after many years understand the “why”. This is therapy: You’re driving down the highway on a long journey and after hearing strange noises from the engine your car just slows down..... and stops… then fails to start up again. You open the bonnet thinking it could be something simple but realize the issue probably wasn’t covered in your 2-day “Fix-it-yourself-Car-workshop”. It’s no surprise. Try googling “what causes a car to stall” and you’ll get everything from battery or alternator problems, through air and oil filter, voltage, wrong gas conversion, requiring new solenoid blah, blah, blah. So you take it to the “expert”, the mechanic, and after many hours of pulling an engine apart he discovers the reason for the noise.
And now you feel great because you know why the car wasn’t moving. Right? Uh uh… You see … the mechanic doesn’t have the specific part your car needs to get going. And traditional therapy was a lot like that. “Let’s pull this thing apart, dissect it beyond dreams imaginable and let’s find out why it doesn’t work.” Problem is, that, more importantly than ‘Knowing why it doesn’t work” was the objective of “Arriving to your desired destination”. If you could’ve had both, that’s great. But if someone said they could fix it in a short amount of time and... guarantee it will never happen again even if you don’t understand the exact cause, which would you choose? If getting to your final destination was the primary goal then you’d probably go with the second option. Coaching is about that.
Whether we’re talking about the business and corporate world, health management or time management or the more ‘touchy’ areas of conflict resolution and emotional-mastery, coaching is about getting you the results you want and giving you the tools to replicate those results whenever you need to. It’s about getting ‘flown’ to your destination but more importantly, all the while, being shown how to fly your own plane.
Therapy will help you understand why you couldn’t get there. Consultants and Counselors will tell you a better way to attempt getting there. A Life Coach will run with you and help you discover the best way to get there while giving you all the tools to ensure a safe and prompt arrival. Please notice I said “safe and prompt” NOT “effortless” and of course ‘prompt’ within your desired outcome. A 1000m peak will generally be achieved in less time than Mt Everest’s 8848m peak.
Are you tired of hearing others tell their story of making it to the top? Do you want to have your very ‘own’ success story to share? If you want more information, look at a tool that can help you understand where you are and where you want to be.
